The Capital of Children

From Mette Thybo, CEO:

"We are providing a hands-on news exprience for children at our new Capital of Children News Studio, and are well aware that many news organizations around the world are doing this kind of activity. We are very much interested in learning about what others are doing and are delighted to be able to contribute making their work better known."

Denmark's Capital of Children, a supporter of the World Young Reader Prize, is a
unique partnership between city of Billund Municipality and the LEGO Foundation that specializes in children’s play, learning and creativity.

It has established a News Studio in cooperation with the Danish Broadcasting Corporation children’s channel, DR Ultra. This facility offers students ages 10-14 the chance to tell their own stories in a professional media environment that was created with the help of a professional set designer.

The aim of the News Studio is to teach children how to tell the news that matters to them in their own voice: to better communicate their ideas, beliefs and passions in a studio environment. Thereby they become aware of the world around them and take an active part in society.

The Capital of Children’s News Studio can accommodate an entire class of 20 students at one time. In the studio, the children are given guidance on lighting and filming, learn how to act in front of the camera and then finally edit their videos iPads.

Other key Capital of Children initiatives involve children learning chess and robotics. More at www.capitalofchildren.com
