Ethiopian journalist Eskinder Nega, the 2014 WAN-IFRA Golden Pen of Freedom laureate, has reportedly been released from jail after serving seven years of an 18-year sentence as a convicted “terrorist” for challenging the very same laws used to imprison him.

Can Dündar’s journalism career has spanned nearly four decades, with positions in some of Turkey’s most notable newspapers, magazines and television channels. Pressures on journalists and media organisations are designed to reduce transparency and accountability in society. Usually it means powerful interests have something to hide from public view. Ultimately, media need to do more to convince public opinion that such targeting is an attack on common values and will not be tolerated.
