On the occasion of WAN-IFRA sponsored roundtable on gender equality in the news in the Middle East and North Africa which took place on 9 and 10 December 2016, MENA news media leaders issued a declaration in support of working towards gender parity in leadership positions within MENA newsrooms as well as better representation of women in media.

The following is the text of the MENA Media Leaders’ Gender Declaration and its current signatories. The WAN-IFRA Board unanimously endorsed a similar resolution at the occasion of its annual meeting held alongside  the MENA roundtable.

Text of declaration:

Media leaders from the Middle East and North Africa in collaboration with the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) call on media leaders and media executives in the news publishing community in the Arab world to join them in addressing the issue of diversity in news media as a matter of priority.

We encourage media companies to take positive action in support of diversity in newsrooms and in their decision-making structures.

-- Encouraging, promoting and increasing diversity in decision-making positions;

-- Committing themselves to consider women candidates as representatives to their media organizations, striving to increase the gender balance.

-- Reinforcing or, where necessary, adopting policies that ensure equal rights for all employees, including right to equal pay;

-- Combating discrimination and stereotypes through adopting policies that ensure equal rights.
