News organizations have less than a month to try for a WAN-IFRA World Young Reader Prize

Paris, Frankfurt – 2016-05-26

The deadline is 21 June for the The annual World Young Reader Prize that honors excellence in news publisher engagement of the young in all ways on all platforms.

News organizations can enter in eight categories: brand, editorial, enduring excellence, news in education, public service, a special digital first category for truly break-through innovation, the Natasa Prize for printing plants and World Young Reader News Publisher of the Year.

A teacher will join this year's winners to receive the first "Global Media Literacy Teacher" award for excellence in helping students examine all facets of news, including the role of journalism in a democracy. Candidates are encouraged to obtain endorsement from a news publisher or media association endorsement, and the winner will get support to attend the prize ceremony for all the awards on 1 December at the Newseum interactive museum in Washington, DC. Supporters of this year's awards are the American Press Institute, NewseumED, CCI Europe and the Harnser Group.

World News Media Congress, 12-14 June: New guide for visiting journalists to help them talk with students about freedom of expression

WAN-IFRA is creating a new basic guide for visiting journalists to help them talk with students about how freedom of expression and media freedom interlink and, with the Newseum, resources to help children and teenagers approach all content with the eye of a reporter Colombian teachers will test two draft news literacy activities during a special round table at the World News Media Congress set for 12-14 June in Cartagena. During that session, ANDIARIOS, the Colombian news publishers association, will be inducted as a WAN-IFRA Center of Youth Engagement Excellence.
