Start-ups accelerate innovation in publishing houses

The OPENMEDIA Innovation Hub at the Revenue Media Port presented innovative publishing houses that work together with start-ups to develop new ideas and strategies for a transforming industry.

Lior Kodner, Head of Digital at Ha’aretz, a daily paper in Tel Aviv, Israel, presented some examples of add-on modules the paper has implemented on its website, all developed together with small start-up companies.

He explained that typically, the start-ups take the initiative to contact the publishing house. Ha’aretz works closely with its developers to adapt the add-ons to its needs before releasing them to the public. Sometimes the process remains unfinished, such as when the startup goes out of business or halts development for other reasons.

Nonetheless, Kodner said these projects are worth the time and effort – and a great driver for innovation in the publishing house.

WAN-IFRA’s OPENMEDIA Innovation Hub is an initiative designed to share new ideas and to provide a platform for publishers to network with innovators from within the industry and beyond.

Other presentations at this Media Port session included: Ulrich Schmitz, Chief Technology Officer at Axel Springer, Germany, Helene Juhola, Director R&D at the Federation of the Finnish Media Industry (Finnmedia), Rick van Dijk, Operational Director for Stimuleringsfonds voor de Pers in the Netherlands, Christian Lüdtke, Founder and CEO, etventure, Germany, and Ole Molgaard, Program Director at CBS Executive, Denmark.
