Datuk Mohd Nordin Abbas

Mohd Noordin Abbas is 56 years old and holds a Master Degree in Management Science (Operational Research) from St. Louis University, USA and a Bachelor of Science Degree with a Double Major in Accounting and Finance from Southern Illinois University, USA.


He started his career at Peat Marwick, Mitchell & Co. in 1986 before joining Bank Industri & Teknologi Malaysia Berhad, a leading Development Bank in 1987.  With the formation of Export-Import Bank of Malaysia Berhad (Exim Bank) in 1995, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bank Industri & Teknologi Malaysia Berhad,  he headed the Cross Border Credit Department of the Bank. 


In 1996, he went on to be the General Manager cum Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Export Credit Insurance Berhad (MECIB), the National Export Credit Insurance Agency of Malaysia.  In year 2000, he returned to EXIM Bank as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) until February 2006. When Exim Bank came under direct ownership of The Ministry of Finance in 2006, he was made the Chief Operation Officer (COO) until his mutual separation scheme in Feb 2007. 



During his career in MECIB and Exim Bank, he specialized in international business and political risk profiles of countries. He presented numerous papers both in Malaysia and abroad. He was the Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (ICC Malaysia) Banking Committee and a member of ICC Malaysia Executive Board.  He was also a member of MATRADE’s National Professional Services Export Council (NAPSEC),


At international level, he was the Chairman of Asian Exim Banks Training Committee entrusted to strategize on Human Capital Development for Exim Banks Asia. He successfully developed excellent relationship with Ministries and Agencies in Malaysia such as MITI, Matrade, CIDB and overseas Development Financial Institutions like Exim Banks in Asia.


In 2005, he represented Exim Banks of Asian Countries to a brainstorming session with Export Development Banks in Africa and Latin America. The session was held in Geneva, organized by UNCTAD. He was  selected by the group of Exim Banks and Export Development Banks to present the outcome  of the session in UNCTAD general meeting.


Presently, he is the Group Managing Director of Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Berhad, a media group that is listed in the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange and also holds directorship in subsidiary companies within Utusan Group namely Utusan Karya Sdn Bhd, Utusan Media Sales Sdn Bhd, Utusan Publications & Distributors Sdn Bhd, Utusan Land Sdn Bhd, Juasa Holdings Sdn Bhd, Jobhouse Sdn Bhd and Utusan Studios Sdn Bhd (formerly known as Utusan Sight & Sound Sdn Bhd). He also sits on the Board of  a public listed company (listed on Thailand Stock Exchange) in Thailand.


He participates in NGOs like PERKASA and GABEM as one of their economic advisors as well as writing articles on economic matters.
