Media Professionals Programme

Since its inception in 2012, WAN-IFRA’s Media Professionals Programme (MPP) has given media managers from around the world leadership skills and support through personalized training and mentoring. During a recent meeting of mentors and mentees in Myanmar and Vietnam in March, the impact of the programme was overwhelmingly evident. And for those who have participated in the MPP over time, the result has been personal and professional growth.

When WAN-IFRA set up the Brain Trust in 2012, it did so with the intention of bringing media professionals together to share insights and information in an inspiring, multi-cultural environment. The recent Media Professionals Program event in Myanmar was an occasion for education, awareness raising and exchange.

“The Palestinian media portray stereotypes of women as sisters, daughters and wives of a male hero, or we are the victims who cry and weep after the death of a beloved one or over a demolished house.” To challenge such stereotypes, Wafa’ Abdel Rahman decided to launch NAWA, a women’s news agency in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

When Fatemah Farag launched her hyperlocal news company Welad Elbalad Media Services in April 2012, she approached the project foremost as a journalist. With a twenty-year career writing for a host of international and local publications behind her, Farag wanted to give voice to people and regions often overlooked in the traditional media.
