Tlotlo Mbazo is Special Projects Editor at the Botswana Guardian.

WAN-IFRA: What did you expect from the WIN programme when you first joined and how has the actual programme differed?

Tlotlo Mbazo: “I thought the WIN programme was just a theory-based programme that was going to give me answers to my work related problems. But I now realise that it is very practical and allows me to apply the skills and knowledge that I attain to my specific situation. The programme does not spoon-feed but helps me towards solutions.

What has been the most important WIN activity for you and why?

“The most important WIN activity is leadership and management. The topics have helped me to be a better leader and I now have confidence to delegate.”

How do you deal differently with challenges in both the workplace and your personal life compared to before you joined WIN?

“I have learned to hold difficult conversations both in the workplace and personally. I have also been able to confront work related challenges as professionally as possible. Before I would be emotional about issues and therefore failed to deal with them effectively.”

What is your most memorable WIN moment?

“My most memorable moment would be when I was asked to be the Director of Ceremonies at our last National Gathering cocktail dinner without prior notification. It made me realise that as a ‘WINner’ I have to always be ready to take some responsibility. That occasion also made me realise that I can do anything that I put my mind to.”

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

“I can’t foretell the future, but the one thing that I know for sure is that I will have achieved the goals that I have set for myself. I see myself with greater influence and being elevated to a more senior position in my workplace.”
