World Newspaper Week

The World Newspaper Week offers a plethora of events like never before featuring something for everyone.

Expo expert advice, part 2: The buzz behind tablets rolls on

In our final instalment leading up to IFRA Expo 2011 (10-12 October) in Vienna, we look at some of the system trends in editorial and advertising, as well as imaging and colour management.

No break for the news

This year is intense on the news front. And news organisations all over the world have been confronted with the necessity to release coverage faster than ever before (thank you, Twitter). It is impossible to cope with this rhythm without an appropriate organisation as increasing manpower is not on the agenda.

Investments in production equipment

Anyone who has followed the sales announcements and reports about installations and technical developments in the areas of newspaper production in the last year will see that high quality, efficiency, low costs  and quick ROI rule the investing environment.

Press freedom at the heart of Congress

As part of the build-up to the World Newspaper Congress and World Editors Forum, the annual Press Freedom Round Table event will explore the many different threats to freedom of expression faced by the global news publishing industry.

Congress: Securing new revenue models

“Taking Publishing to the Next Level” is the theme of this year’s World Newspaper Congress and World Editors Forum. And that applies particularly to the Congress where the industry’s top media executives will be looking for answers to this question: “What is that next level and how do I get there?”

Tablet publishing turns the page

The iPad is still clearly ahead of the field 15 months after it launched. But more interesting is what is happening on the news app development side. The 4th International E-reading & Tablet Conference (11 October in Vienna) will focus on that.

WEF preview: Editors wearing many hats

The editor as innovator, as entrepreneur, as the centre of the community, and more: the World Editors Forum will explore these multiple facets of an editor’s job and look at how he/she can excel at each but still maintain a key focus on good content.

World Newspaper Week: Mark your calendars!

Developments

Making mobile click in Africa

With a regional mobile penetration rate of just 36 percent, mobile use in Sub-Saharan Africa might seem fairly insignificant. But when compared to an Internet penetration rate of less than 9 percent, and with a year-on-year growth rate of 65 percent for 2010, it immediately becomes clear why newspapers in the region are turning to mobile and mobile-based Internet to reach their readers.

Innovation helps bring print ads to life

As newspaper publishers everywhere seek to increase their advertising revenues, it’s worth remembering – as well as reminding advertisers – print ads work. While media companies are also obviously interested in increasing their digital revenues, the fact is the overwhelming majority of revenue is still coming from print, and it’s likely to stay that way for the foreseeable future.

Jawa Pos posts top honours in youth contest

With 11 years of successful engagement with the youth of Indonesia, Jawa Pos is indeed a worthy choice for the two top prizes in WAN-IFRA’s annual World Young Reader Prize competition. The daily was named Newspaper of the Year for its daily youth section, DetEksi, and earned the top prize for Enduring Excellence.

Broxbourne raising the bar with efficiency

Newsprinters’ Broxbourne printing plant can proudly lay claim to being the world’s biggest newspaper printing plant, but Operations Director Steve Whitehead would prefer the plant be renown for being “the best newspaper printing plant in the world.” That’s the goal and the company is well on its way.

Industry updates

ISO 12647-3 standard realised in Color Quality Club

The ISO 12647 standard series is a unique guide for the printing industry worldwide that defines binding rules for the production of all types of printing copy. The 12647-3 standard for coldset newspaper printing is currently being revised.
